STIMULANT DRUGS
Why this applies to Pseudoephedrine
Pseudoephedrine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Pu-erh Tea interacts with.
Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: pu-erh tea has caffeine in it, and pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) is itself a stimulant that revs up your system to shrink swollen nasal passages. Stack a stimulant on top of caffeine and the two can pile on each other. You might notice a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, a slight bump in blood pressure, or feeling wired and restless.
This is more of a common-sense, expert-opinion caution than a proven danger, so a single cup with an occasional Sudafed isn't likely to cause trouble for most folks. Still, if you already deal with high blood pressure, a heart rhythm issue, or anxiety, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, and go easy on the caffeine while you're taking it.
