Pu-erh Tea and Amoxapine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

TRICYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS (TCAs)

Why this applies to Amoxapine

Amoxapine falls under TRICYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS (TCAs) — the group Pu-erh Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, TCAs might bind with pu-erh tea constituents when taken at the same time.
In vitro research suggests that the tannins in pu-erh tea might cause precipitation of TCAs. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with amoxapine (Asendin) and pu-erh tea. The concern is pretty mild. Pu-erh is rich in tannins, which are plant compounds that can latch onto certain medications right in your stomach. In a lab dish, those tannins made tricyclic antidepressants like amoxapine clump together (precipitate). If that happened in your gut, in theory a little less of your dose might get absorbed, which could mean your antidepressant works slightly less well.

The key word is theoretical. This has only been seen in test-tube studies, never reported in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over a cup of tea. If you want to be cautious, just space the tea a couple hours apart from your dose. And always check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Amoxapine page

“Amoxapine (Asendin) is an older tricyclic antidepressant, and its supplement list deserves real care. Three of the 68 ingredients on file are rated major: activated charcoal can soak up the drug before your body gets it, lithium raises the risk of serotonin syndrome (a dangerous serotonin overload), and scopolia piles onto amoxapine's…”
