Pu-erh Tea and Clinafloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Clinafloxacin

Clinafloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Pu-erh Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, quinolone antibiotics might increase the levels and adverse effects of caffeine.
Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Concomitant use of caffeine and quinolones can decrease caffeine clearance and increase effects and risk of adverse effects.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: it's not that pu-erh tea changes how your antibiotic works. It's the other way around. Clinafloxacin, like other quinolone antibiotics, can slow down how fast your body clears caffeine, and pu-erh tea is a caffeinated drink. So while you're on this antibiotic, the caffeine from your tea can hang around longer and build up a bit more than usual.

For most people that just means feeling extra jittery, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach. This is rated a minor interaction and the evidence is fairly limited, so it isn't dangerous for most folks. A simple fix is to go easy on caffeine while you're taking it. If you're sensitive to caffeine or have heart concerns, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clinafloxacin page

“If you have been prescribed clinafloxacin, a quinolone antibiotic, start with the four interactions rated major, because they all do the same thing: apple, grapefruit, and orange juice, along with activated charcoal, can sharply cut how much of the drug you absorb, and an antibiotic that never reaches your bloodstream cannot clear the…”
