Here's the simple version: pu-erh tea has caffeine in it, and Modafinil is already a wakefulness-promoting medication. This isn't a case where the tea changes how your body breaks down the drug. Instead, you're really just stacking two stimulating effects on top of each other.

When you pair them, you may notice more of the jittery side: a racing or pounding heart, feeling wired or anxious, headache, trouble settling down to sleep, or a bit of an upset stomach. Honestly, this is mostly common-sense caution (it's based on expert opinion, not strong studies), and an occasional cup is unlikely to be a big deal for most folks. If you drink a lot of tea or feel overstimulated, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
