Pu-erh tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the clearance rate of caffeine from pu-erh tea and increase caffeine levels.

Here's a twist with this pairing: it's not your birth control pill that gets affected, it's the caffeine in your pu-erh tea. The estrogen part of this combo pill (mestranol) can gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the same enzyme that breaks down caffeine. So when you sip pu-erh while on this pill, the caffeine may linger a bit longer in your system than usual.

In real life, that might mean you feel the caffeine more strongly: a little jittery, a faster heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or an uneasy stomach. This is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs work, not something proven to cause big problems, and your pill keeps working normally. If you notice you're extra wired, just ease up on the tea or chat with your pharmacist.

Here's a small thing worth knowing about your birth control pill (mestranol and norethindrone). The interaction here isn't really about your pill becoming weaker or stronger. Instead, it works the other way around: the hormones in your pill can slow down how fast your body clears caffeine, by roughly 40% to 65%. Since pu-erh tea contains caffeine, that caffeine can hang around longer and feel stronger.

In plain terms, your usual cup or two of pu-erh might hit a little harder. Think jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. This is considered minor and the evidence is modest, so you don't need to give up your tea. If you notice you're more sensitive to caffeine, just cutting back a bit usually helps. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.
