Chlorthalidone falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Quassia interacts with.

Overuse of quassia might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking quassia along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia. Initiation of potassium supplementation or an increase in potassium supplement dose may be necessary for some patients.
Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's the gist with chlorthalidone: this water pill already pushes your body to flush out extra fluid and salt, and along the way it can lower your potassium. The worry on file is that quassia, used heavily, might add to that potassium loss, leaving levels lower than they should be.

If potassium dips too far, you could notice muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat. I'll be honest though, this concern is theoretical, based on how the two might behave together rather than solid human studies. An occasional bitter tonic is unlikely to be a problem, but regular high-dose quassia is where I'd be cautious. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist, and don't change your medication on your own.

What Is Chlorthalidone Used For?

Brand names: Hygroton, Thalitone

Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Chlorthalidone is also used as an add-on treatment for edema (fluid buildup) caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. Thalitone is additionally indicated for edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome.
