Quercetin and Acetaminophen, Codeine, Doxylamine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Codeine, Doxylamine

Acetaminophen, Codeine, Doxylamine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Quercetin interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2D6 substrates.

In vitro research show that quercetin inhibits CYP2D6. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the part that matters with Mersyndol: the codeine in it is a prodrug. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to turn codeine into morphine, which is what actually relieves your pain. Quercetin appears to block that same enzyme, at least in lab studies.

So if quercetin slowed that conversion, you might get less pain relief from the codeine, not more, since your body would make less morphine. I want to be honest, though: this effect has only been seen in test tubes, never confirmed in real people, so it may not amount to much. Food amounts of quercetin are very unlikely to matter. If you take high-dose supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

  • Antioxidant support
  • Heart and blood pressure health
  • Anti-inflammatory support
  • Immune support
  • Exercise recovery

Quercetin is a plant flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties found in many common foods and sold as a supplement. While early research is interesting for allergies, blood pressure, and inflammation, strong human evidence is limited for most uses. It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking high-dose supplements.
