ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Methyldopa
Methyldopa falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Quercetin interacts with.
Quercetin can modestly decrease blood pressure in people with mild hypertension. Theoretically, it might have additive blood pressure lowering effects when used with antihypertensive drugs.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: methyldopa lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. Quercetin, in concentrated supplement doses, may also nudge blood pressure down a little on its own. Put them together and those effects can add up, so your reading could drop more than you expect.
If your pressure goes too low, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or faint, especially when you stand up quickly. The good news is this is rated as a theoretical, possible interaction based on lower quality studies, and the everyday amounts of quercetin you get from foods like onions and apples are very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're thinking about a high-dose supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your blood pressure.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Methyldopa page
“Alcohol is the entry I would read first. Methyldopa (Aldomet) can be hard on the liver by itself, and 38 of the 173 supplement and herbal ingredients here, beer and wine included, carry liver risks that could stack on top of that.”

About Quercetin
What is Quercetin?
- Seasonal allergies
- Antioxidant support
- Heart and blood pressure health
- Anti-inflammatory support
- Immune support
- Exercise recovery
Quercetin is a plant flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties found in many common foods and sold as a supplement. While early research is interesting for allergies, blood pressure, and inflammation, strong human evidence is limited for most uses. It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking high-dose supplements.
About Methyldopa
What Is Methyldopa Used For?
Brand names: Aldomet, Methyldopa
Methyldopa tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of complications that come with uncontrolled hypertension.

Methyldopa Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Methyldopa as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Quercetin — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
