Rhodiola and Chloral Hydrate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Chloral Hydrate

Chloral Hydrate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Rhodiola interacts with.

Theoretically, rhodiola might increase the risk of adverse effects when taken with CNS depressants.
A review of adverse event reports in Poland identified cases of excessive sedation, myoclonus, hypotension, and hallucinations when rhodiola was taken with haloperidol, diazepam, or alprazolam.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Chloral hydrate is a sedative that calms your brain and nervous system to help you fall asleep. Rhodiola is usually thought of as an energizing herb, but the worry here is that it may add to that same sedating, calming effect rather than fight it. Combining the two could, in theory, leave you more drowsy than expected, with deeper sleepiness, dizziness, low blood pressure, or feeling foggy and unsteady when you wake.

I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is. It comes from a handful of anecdotal reports involving other sedatives, not chloral hydrate specifically, so this is a possible but minor and largely theoretical concern. Still, since both affect your central nervous system, it's worth running it by your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Chloral Hydrate page

“Chloral hydrate is a sedative, prescribed to bring on sleep or to calm a patient before a procedure, and the supplements sleepless people reach for most (kava, ashwagandha, L-tryptophan) sit squarely on this list. Of the 95 ingredients with interactions on file, 78 add their own sedative pull to a drug that already slows the brain and…”

Rhodiola is an herb traditionally used to fight fatigue and help the body cope with stress.
