I want to be upfront with you here: the interaction we have on file was written for immunosuppressant medications, the idea being that rhodiola may gently rev up the immune system and work against drugs meant to calm it down. Flupenthixol, though, isn't an immunosuppressant at all. It's an antipsychotic used for conditions like schizophrenia and sometimes depression, so this particular immune-related concern really doesn't apply to it.

On top of that, the evidence behind this note is weak, coming only from lab and animal studies, not people. That said, since rhodiola can affect mood and energy, it's still worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two, just to keep things on the safe side.

A review of adverse event reports in Poland identified cases of excessive sedation, myoclonus, hypotension, and hallucinations when rhodiola was taken with haloperidol, diazepam, or alprazolam.

Flupenthixol is an antipsychotic that can already make some people feel drowsy, lightheaded, or slowed down. The concern here is that rhodiola taken alongside it could add to those calming effects. In a handful of reports from Poland, people combining rhodiola with similar brain-acting medicines noticed things like extra sedation, muscle twitching (myoclonus), drops in blood pressure, or even hallucinations.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this is theoretical and based only on a few anecdotal cases, so it is rated as a minor interaction. Rhodiola does not change how your body clears flupenthixol; it is more about overlapping effects. Still, if you take flupenthixol, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding rhodiola, and watch for unusual drowsiness or dizziness.

What is Rhodiola?

Rhodiola is an herb traditionally used to fight fatigue and help the body cope with stress. Some small studies suggest it may modestly reduce fatigue and improve mood, but the evidence is limited and not strong. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
