Rhodiola and Valbenazine Tosylate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Rhodiola interacts with whole categories of medication. Valbenazine Tosylate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Rhodiola in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Valbenazine Tosylate

Valbenazine Tosylate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rhodiola interacts with.

Theoretically, rhodiola might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP3A4. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. However, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days does not inhibit the metabolism of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear Ingrezza (valbenazine). In lab dish studies, rhodiola has shown it might slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in a real person, valbenazine could build up a bit higher than usual, which in theory might nudge up side effects like drowsiness, balance problems, or a slow or uneven heartbeat.

That said, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. This is rated a minor interaction, and a human study found rhodiola did not actually meaningfully block CYP3A4. The effect also varies a lot from product to product. Still, since valbenazine is a once-daily medicine you take consistently, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before adding rhodiola.

CNS DEPRESSANTS

2 of 2

Valbenazine Tosylate also falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS.

Theoretically, rhodiola might increase the risk of adverse effects when taken with CNS depressants.
A review of adverse event reports in Poland identified cases of excessive sedation, myoclonus, hypotension, and hallucinations when rhodiola was taken with haloperidol, diazepam, or alprazolam.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture: the concern with combining Rhodiola and Ingrezza (valbenazine) is mostly theoretical. Valbenazine can already cause drowsiness, and Rhodiola has been linked, in a small number of reported cases with other calming medications, to extra sedation, low blood pressure, brief muscle jerks, and rarely hallucinations. Pairing the two could add to that sleepy, foggy feeling.

That said, the evidence here is weak and anecdotal, not from solid studies, so I wouldn't be alarmed. If you take Ingrezza and want to try Rhodiola, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first. Watch for unusual drowsiness or dizziness, and don't start or stop anything on your own.
