Rooibos + Axitinib
Axitinib brand name: Inlyta.
Rooibos has a moderate interaction with Axitinib. Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Axitinib
Axitinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: your body clears Inlyta (axitinib) using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest that concentrated rooibos extracts may slow this enzyme down. If that happens, axitinib could clear more slowly and build up in your system, which can mean stronger effects and more side effects, things like high blood pressure, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, or hand and foot soreness.
I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is only seen in test-tube research, not in real patients, so it's more of a theoretical caution. A normal cup of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble, while concentrated extract capsules are a different story. Since axitinib is a serious cancer drug, please run any rooibos products past your oncology pharmacist or doctor first.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

This page covers Rooibos only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Axitinib page lists 138 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Grapefruit (major), St. John's Wort (major), Acacia Rigidula (moderate) and Adrafinil (moderate).
By severity: 3 major · 94 moderate · 41 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Axitinib page
“Grapefruit is the first thing I would take off the table on axitinib (Inlyta), a targeted therapy for advanced kidney cancer. It blocks the liver enzyme (CYP3A4) that clears axitinib, so levels climb and side effects with them.”

About Rooibos
What is Rooibos?
- Caffeine-free beverage
- Antioxidant support
- Heart health
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- General wellness
Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea from South Africa that is rich in antioxidants and generally considered safe as a beverage. While lab and early studies suggest possible benefits for heart health, blood sugar, and inflammation, strong human evidence is lacking for most medical uses. Enjoy it as a tea, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts for health reasons.
About Axitinib
What Is Axitinib Used For?
Brand name: Inlyta
Axitinib (brand name Inlyta) is used to treat advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), a type of kidney cancer. Inlyta can be used as a first-line treatment — meaning the very first treatment you receive — when combined with either avelumab or pembrolizumab, two other cancer medicines.
Inlyta is also approved as a single agent (on its own) for patients with advanced RCC who have already tried one other systemic (body-wide) cancer therapy that did not work or stopped working.
