Brivaracetam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2C19 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP2C19 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist for Briviact (brivaracetam): your body partly clears it using a liver enzyme called CYP2C19. In test-tube studies, a concentrated rooibos extract seemed to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, brivaracetam could linger a bit longer and its effects might be amplified, possibly leading to more drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, or unsteadiness. Brivaracetam is not a prodrug, so this would mean stronger effects, not weaker seizure control.

The important part: this is only laboratory evidence, not something proven in people. A regular cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated extracts are the bigger question mark, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before using those.

About Brivaracetam

What Is Brivaracetam Used For?

Brand name: Briviact

Brivaracetam — available as tablets, oral solution, and injection under the brand name Briviact, as well as generic forms — is indicated for the treatment of partial-onset seizures (seizures that begin in one part of the brain) in patients 1 month of age and older. It can be used alone (monotherapy) or alongside other seizure medicines (adjunctive therapy).

Briviact injection is specifically intended for intravenous use when a patient is temporarily unable to take medicine by mouth — it is not meant for long-term IV use. The oral tablet and oral solution forms are used for ongoing treatment.
