Rooibos and Celecoxib, Tramadol

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Rooibos interacts with whole categories of medication. Celecoxib, Tramadol falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Rooibos in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

1 of 3

Why this applies to Celecoxib, Tramadol

Celecoxib, Tramadol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2D6 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Seglentis combines two medicines. The part to watch here is tramadol, which leans on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to turn into its more powerful pain-relieving form. So tramadol acts a bit like a prodrug. In a test-tube study, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed CYP2D6 down. If that happened in the body, you would expect less of tramadol's active pain relief, not more, even though the database note says "increased effects." The celecoxib piece isn't really affected by this enzyme.

Here's the reassuring part: this is lab-only evidence, and a regular cup of rooibos tea almost certainly won't matter. Concentrated extracts are the bigger question mark. If you use those, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Celecoxib, Tramadol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2C9 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP2C9 enzyme activity.

Seglentis combines two medicines: celecoxib (an anti-inflammatory) and tramadol (a pain reliever). The celecoxib part is cleared mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In test-tube studies only, rooibos extract seemed to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in the body, the celecoxib could hang around longer and build up, which might mean more of its typical effects like stomach upset, heartburn, fluid retention, or higher blood pressure.

Here's the reassuring part: this is theoretical and comes from lab research, not from people. A regular cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause a problem. Concentrated rooibos extracts are the bigger unknown. If you use those, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

3 of 3

Celecoxib, Tramadol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Seglentis combines celecoxib (an anti-inflammatory) with tramadol (a pain reliever). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process tramadol. In lab dish studies, a strong rooibos extract slowed that enzyme down. If that happened in the body, tramadol could hang around longer and feel stronger, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, or constipation.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only test-tube evidence, not something proven in people, and a normal cup of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos extracts are the bigger question mark. Before starting any rooibos supplement alongside Seglentis, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

  • Antioxidant support
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset
  • General wellness

Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea from South Africa that is rich in antioxidants and generally considered safe as a beverage. While lab and early studies suggest possible benefits for heart health, blood sugar, and inflammation, strong human evidence is lacking for most medical uses. Enjoy it as a tea, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts for health reasons.
