Dabrafenib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist with rooibos and your dabrafenib (Tafinlar). Dabrafenib is cleared in part by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies (not human studies) suggest a concentrated rooibos extract can slow that enzyme down. In theory, if that enzyme works slower, more dabrafenib could hang around in your body, which might nudge up side effects like fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, tiredness, or skin changes.

The good news: this is only based on test-tube research, so it's far from proven. A cup or two of plain rooibos tea is unlikely to be a problem for most people. The bigger caution is with concentrated rooibos supplements or extracts. Since this is a cancer medicine, please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist before adding any rooibos product.

About Dabrafenib

What Is Dabrafenib Used For?

Brand name: Tafinlar

Dabrafenib is used to treat cancers that carry a specific change (mutation) in the BRAF gene — most often called a BRAF V600E or V600K mutation. These mutations cause cancer cells to grow out of control. Before starting this medicine, a tumor test must confirm the mutation is present.

It can be used alone or — more commonly — paired with another targeted drug, trametinib. Conditions it treats include advanced or inoperable melanoma (skin cancer), certain lung cancers, anaplastic thyroid cancer, low-grade brain tumors (glioma) in children, and other solid tumors with the same mutation that haven't responded to prior treatment.
