Darunavir, Cobicistat falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Your Prezcobix is a two-in-one HIV medication. Darunavir is the active drug, and cobicistat is a built-in booster that intentionally slows down the CYP3A4 enzyme so darunavir stays in your body longer and works better. So this combo already depends heavily on CYP3A4 handling.

The concern here is that rooibos may also block CYP3A4, which could push darunavir levels a little higher and possibly add to side effects like nausea, diarrhea, headache, or rash. But honestly, this is only based on lab tests using concentrated rooibos extracts, not human studies, and not on rooibos sipped as tea. A regular cup is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using strong rooibos supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or HIV provider first.

What Is Darunavir and Cobicistat Used For?

Brand name: Prezcobix

Prezcobix and Prezcobix Ped are used to treat HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus type 1) infection. They are always used together with other antiretroviral (anti-HIV) medicines — never alone. Both products are approved for people who are new to HIV treatment (treatment-naïve) and for those who have taken HIV medicines before (treatment-experienced), as long as certain darunavir resistance mutations are not present.

Prezcobix tablets are approved for adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 40 kg. Prezcobix Ped tablets for oral suspension extend coverage to pediatric patients 3 years of age and older weighing at least 15 kg.
