Why this applies to Fexofenadine

Fexofenadine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Here's the honest picture with Allegra (fexofenadine) and rooibos tea. The concern on file is that rooibos might block a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which could let certain drugs build up. But fexofenadine barely relies on that enzyme at all. It's mostly carried in and out of your body unchanged by transporter proteins, not heavily broken down by CYP3A4. So this particular interaction isn't a strong fit for this medicine.

On top of that, the evidence is very weak. It comes from a lab dish using a concentrated rooibos extract, not from people drinking tea. A normal cup or two is very unlikely to change how Allegra works for you. If you take strong rooibos extracts regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

About Fexofenadine

What Is Fexofenadine Used For?

Brand name: Allegra

Fexofenadine temporarily relieves symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and other upper respiratory allergies, including runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

Several products — including Allegra Hives 24hr tablets — are specifically used to reduce hives (urticaria) and relieve the itching that comes with them. Keep in mind that fexofenadine will not prevent hives or stop an allergic skin reaction from happening in the first place.
