Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Aluminum Acetate Used For?

Brand name: Burow's Solution

Aluminum acetate is applied to the skin to temporarily ease the itch, irritation, and discomfort of a range of common skin conditions. Most products — including Tricalm Hydrogel, TriCalm, and Dermeleve cream — are used for poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, athlete's foot, and rashes caused by soaps, detergents, cosmetics, or jewelry.

Dermeleve cream also lists minor burns among its uses. Dermeleve Anti Itch Scalp Serum is specifically formulated for scalp itch and rashes from soaps, detergents, or cosmetics applied to the scalp. The ZO Skin Health powder products target rashes from soaps, detergents, cosmetics, or jewelry.
