Some Ixazomib Citrate Products Have a Food Rule — Sassafras Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Ixazomib Citrate says to take it on an empty stomach. Most supplements — Sassafras included — are taken with a meal, so the easy mistake is swallowing both together at breakfast. Where that rule applies, keep Ixazomib Citrate on its own and move Sassafras to a meal later in the day.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Ixazomib Citrate products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Ixazomib Used For?

Brand name: Ninlaro

Ninlaro (ixazomib) is used to treat multiple myeloma — a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. It is always used together with two other medicines, lenalidomide and dexamethasone, and is approved for adults who have already tried at least one other treatment.

Ninlaro is not recommended as maintenance therapy or for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma in combination with lenalidomide and dexamethasone outside of controlled clinical trials.
