Here's the simple version: Mepergan combines meperidine (a strong opioid pain reliever) with promethazine (a sedating antihistamine). Both of these already make people drowsy on their own. Sassafras has been reported to have its own calming, sedative-like quality, so the worry is that stacking it on top could pile on the sleepiness. You might feel groggier than expected, more lightheaded, slower to react, or have trouble staying alert behind the wheel.

I'll be honest with you, though: this concern is theoretical, based on how these things behave in the body rather than real reports of harm. The bigger reason I'd steer clear of sassafras is its safrole content, which can damage the liver and isn't considered safe to swallow. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage.
