Here's the gist for Ingrezza (valbenazine): this medicine can already make some folks feel drowsy or tired. Sassafras may add to that sleepy effect. So the concern isn't about your liver enzymes breaking the drug down differently, it's simply two things that can both calm the brain stacking on top of each other, potentially leaving you more sluggish, dizzy, or groggy than usual.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical caution based on how these things work, not something proven in real patients. Still, given that sassafras contains safrole (which the FDA banned in foods because of cancer and liver concerns), I'd steer clear of taking it internally at all. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

What Is Valbenazine Used For?

Brand name: Ingrezza

Valbenazine — sold as Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle — is approved for two conditions in adults. The first is tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder that causes uncontrolled, repetitive facial or body movements, often brought on by long-term use of certain psychiatric medications. The second is chorea associated with Huntington's disease, which refers to the involuntary, dance-like jerking movements that are a hallmark of that condition.

Both Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle are approved for both of these uses.
