Here's the gist for Vigabatrin (Sabril) and sassafras. Vigabatrin is a seizure medicine that can already leave you feeling drowsy, tired, or foggy. Sassafras may have mild calming, sedative-type effects of its own, so the worry on file is simply that combining the two could pile on extra sleepiness. That might look like more daytime tiredness, dizziness, or trouble concentrating.

I'll be honest: this concern is theoretical, based on how the ingredients behave rather than real cases, so it's not a high-alarm situation. Vigabatrin isn't a prodrug, so it works the same way regardless. The bigger issue, in my view, is that sassafras contains safrole, which the FDA banned in foods over liver and cancer concerns. I'd steer clear of internal sassafras and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What is Sassafras?

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

About Vigabatrin

What Is Vigabatrin Used For?

Brand name: Sabril

Vigabatrin is used to treat two types of seizure conditions. For refractory complex partial seizures (seizures that have not responded well to other treatments), vigabatrin oral solution and tablets are used as an add-on therapy in patients 2 years of age and older — it is not a first-line treatment. Sabril, Vigadrone, and vigabatrin-branded products carry this indication.

For infantile spasms — a specific type of seizure disorder in very young children — vigabatrin oral solution is used as a standalone (monotherapy) treatment in infants 1 month to 2 years of age. Vigafyde oral solution is indicated specifically for infantile spasms monotherapy in this same age group. In all cases, treatment is only appropriate when the potential benefits outweigh the risk of permanent vision loss.
