Why this applies to Abrocitinib

Abrocitinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Schisandra interacts with.

Theoretically, schisandra might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that schisandra inhibits CYP2C19, and animal research shows that schisandra increases the concentration of voriconazole, a CYP2C19 substrate. Theoretically, schisandra may also inhibit the metabolism of other CYP2C19 substrates. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Cibinqo (abrocitinib). Your body partly clears this eczema medicine using a liver enzyme called CYP2C19. Lab and animal studies suggest schisandra can slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in people, abrocitinib could build up a bit higher than expected, which may bump up its effects and side effects (things like nausea, headache, acne flares, or a greater chance of infections since this drug calms the immune system).

The honest part: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube and animal data, and it hasn't been shown in humans. So I wouldn't panic. Still, abrocitinib is a serious medication, so loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding schisandra so they can keep an eye on you.

Here's the basic idea with Schisandra and your eczema medicine, Cibinqo (abrocitinib). Your body partly clears abrocitinib using a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Lab and animal studies hint that Schisandra may speed that enzyme up, which in theory could clear abrocitinib a little faster and leave you with less of the drug working. If that happened, your eczema relief might slip, with more itching, dryness, or flare-ups creeping back.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is only a theoretical concern from test tube and animal data, and it has never been shown in real people. So I wouldn't panic. Just give your pharmacist or dermatologist a heads-up before adding Schisandra so they can keep an eye on how well your skin stays controlled.

About Abrocitinib

What Is Abrocitinib Used For?

Brand name: Cibinqo

Cibinqo (abrocitinib) is used to treat moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children 12 years of age and older. It is specifically for people whose eczema has not been adequately controlled with other systemic (whole-body) treatments, including biologics, or when those treatments are not a safe option.

Cibinqo is not recommended to be used at the same time as other JAK inhibitors, biologic immunomodulators, or other immunosuppressants (medicines that reduce immune system activity).
