Doxycycline Hyclate falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Schisandra interacts with.

Schisandra might increase the levels and clinical effects of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research shows that schisandra extracts and constituents such as schisandrin B inhibit P-glycoprotein mediated efflux in intestinal cells and in P-glycoprotein over-expressing cell lines. Additionally, a small clinical study shows that schisandra increases the peak concentration and overall exposure to talinolol, a P-glycoprotein probe substrate. Theoretically, schisandra might inhibit the efflux of other P-glycoprotein substrates.

Here's the gist for doxycycline. Your body normally uses a kind of cellular pump called P-glycoprotein to move certain drugs out, including doxycycline. Schisandra may slow that pump down, so in theory a bit more doxycycline could stay in your system than usual.

If that happened, you might notice the common doxycycline side effects a little more, things like stomach upset, nausea, heartburn, or extra sun sensitivity. I want to be honest though: this concern comes mostly from lab and animal studies, not solid human research with doxycycline, so it's a fairly weak signal. Doxycycline also isn't a narrow-window drug. If you'd like to use both, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on how you feel.

What Is Doxycycline Used For?

Brand names: Acticlate, Acticlate Cap, Lymepak

Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline family of antibiotics. It's prescribed for many types of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tick-borne illnesses like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and eye infections. It's also used to help prevent malaria and, in some cases, as a helper treatment for severe acne.

In situations where penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used — due to allergy, for example — doxycycline can step in as an alternative. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.
