Alprazolam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Schizonepeta interacts with.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear alprazolam (Xanax) out of your system. Lab and animal research hints that a compound in Schizonepeta may speed that enzyme up. If that holds true in people, your body could break down the Xanax a little faster, which might make it feel weaker. You could notice your anxiety or panic symptoms aren't being controlled as well as usual.

I want to be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern based on animal data, not real human studies, so we just don't know how meaningful it is. Alprazolam isn't a prodrug, so this points toward less effect, not more. Before mixing the two, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
