Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6. Theoretically, schizonepeta might increase the effects and side effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), flecainide (Tambocor), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), ondansetron (Zofran), paroxetine (Paxil), risperidone (Risperdal), tramadol (Ultram), venlafaxine (Effexor), and others.

Here's something interesting about hydrocodone. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to turn part of it into hydromorphone, a more potent active form. So in a way, hydrocodone acts a bit like a prodrug. Schizonepeta, in lab and animal studies, appears to slow that same CYP2D6 enzyme. In theory, that could mean less of the active painkiller is formed, so you might get weaker pain relief.

Honestly, the evidence here is very thin (just test tube and animal work), so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, hydrocodone is a serious medication, and pain control matters. If you're considering this herb, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first rather than changing anything on your own.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist with hydrocodone: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process it. Early lab and animal studies hint that schizonepeta might speed that enzyme up. If it did, your body could clear hydrocodone a little faster, which in theory might make your pain relief feel weaker or shorter-lasting.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes only from test tube and animal research, not from people, so we really don't know if it matters in real life. Still, since hydrocodone is a strong opioid for ongoing severe pain, it's not something to guess about. Before adding schizonepeta, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep your pain controlled safely.
