Norelgestromin, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Schizonepeta interacts with.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2. Theoretically, schizonepeta might increase the effects and side effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline, zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Your patch, Ortho Evra, delivers two hormones (norelgestromin and ethinyl estradiol) through the skin. The estrogen part is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. The idea here is that schizonepeta may slow that enzyme down a little, which in theory could let the estrogen build up slightly and bump up estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or bloating.

I want to be straight with you though: this is based only on lab and animal research, not real people, so it's quite theoretical. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since this herb hasn't been well studied alongside birth control, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you notice new symptoms.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Your patch (Ortho Evra) delivers two hormones, norelgestromin and ethinyl estradiol, and your liver clears them partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. The concern here is that Schizonepeta might speed that enzyme up. If it does, your body could break down the hormones a little faster, which in theory could weaken the birth control and raise the chance of breakthrough bleeding, spotting, or a less reliable contraceptive effect.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes only from lab and animal studies, not from people, so we truly don't know if it matters in real life. Still, since an unplanned pregnancy is a serious outcome, I'd play it safe. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your patch routine on your own.
