Why this applies to Estrogen

Estrogen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Sulforaphane interacts with.

Theoretically, sulforaphane might alter the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, its precursor glucoraphanin also appears to increase the expression of the CYP1A2 enzyme, which could lead to increased metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates. These effects have not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: part of your estrogen is handled by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Sulforaphane, the compound in broccoli and other cruciferous veggies, has shown mixed effects on this enzyme in lab and animal tests. In some studies it slows the enzyme down, which could let estrogen levels drift up a bit (think breast tenderness, bloating, nausea, or spotting). Confusingly, a related compound seems to speed the enzyme up, which could weaken estrogen and let hot flashes creep back.

The honest truth is this has only been seen in test tubes and animals, never confirmed in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Eating broccoli is fine. If you're considering a concentrated sulforaphane supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the short version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down estrogen. In lab and animal studies, sulforaphane appears to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in people, estrogen could clear a little more slowly and build up, which might mean stronger estrogen effects or more side effects like breast tenderness, bloating, nausea, headaches, or spotting.

The big caveat: this is only theoretical, based on test-tube and animal work, and it hasn't actually been seen in humans. Eating broccoli and other cruciferous veggies is very unlikely to matter. A concentrated sulforaphane supplement is the bigger question mark. If you're considering one, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and don't change your estrogen on your own.
