These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Sulforaphane interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Sulforaphane in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate
Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Sulforaphane interacts with.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity. However, its precursor glucoraphanin also appears to increase the expression of the CYP1A2 enzyme, which could lead to increased metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates. These effects have not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the honest picture for your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate combo). Sulforaphane, the broccoli compound, can nudge a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. The tricky part is it seems to push both ways: lab and animal studies show it can block this enzyme, while its parent compound may speed it up. So we can't cleanly predict which direction your hormone levels would move.
The reassuring news is that none of this has actually been shown in people, and it's based only on test tube and animal work. Eating broccoli and other cruciferous veggies is not a concern. If you're thinking about a concentrated sulforaphane supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so your contraception stays reliable.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestimate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Animal and in vitro research shows that sulforaphane inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity and downregulates its expression. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your birth control pill, which combines ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate, is partly cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dishes and animal studies, sulforaphane seems to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in people, your body might break down the hormones a little more slowly, so their levels could nudge upward. In plain terms, that could mean a slightly higher chance of estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.
Here's the reassuring part: this has only been seen in test tubes and animals, never in actual humans, and broccoli on your plate is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Before starting one, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Sulforaphane
What is Sulforaphane?
- Antioxidant support
- General cellular health
- Detoxification support
- Inflammation
- Skin and aging concerns
Sulforaphane is a natural compound found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables that has shown promising antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in lab studies, but strong human evidence for most specific health claims is still limited. It is generally well tolerated as part of a vegetable-rich diet, but if you take a concentrated supplement, talk to your pharmacist or doctor first.
