Why this applies to Pazopanib

Pazopanib falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of sweet clover with hepatoxic drugs might increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
Orally, large amounts of sweet clover can cause transient liver injury in susceptible individuals, possibly due to coumarin content. In one case report, a patient with multiple sclerosis developed jaundiced palms and a slight elevation in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) after taking sweet clover containing coumarin 10 mg daily for 3 years. Two weeks after starting therapy with subcutaneous interferon (IFN)-beta 1b, aspartate transaminase (AST) and ALT levels increased to 7 and 17 times the upper limit of normal, respectively. Levels normalized after discontinuation of both products. Subsequent use of IFN-beta 1a alone, without sweet clover, resulted in only a very slight increase in AST.

Here's the concern with pairing sweet clover and pazopanib (Votrient). Pazopanib is already known to be tough on the liver, and it carries a boxed warning about serious liver problems. Doctors usually check your liver enzymes (ALT and AST) regularly while you're on it. Sweet clover contains coumarin, which in larger or spoiled supplement amounts has been linked to mild liver injury in sensitive people.

So the worry is simply additive stress on the liver, not a change in how pazopanib itself works. Watch for signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness. This is a theoretical interaction based on how each one behaves, not strong proof, but given pazopanib's liver risks I'd play it safe. Please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before using sweet clover.

Theoretically, fresh sweet clover might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Fresh sweet clover contains coumarinic acids, which are converted to free coumarins during drying. Dicoumarol, which has anticoagulant activity, also has been found in some sweet clover preparations and can be formed if fresh sweet clover is allowed to spoil.

Here's the thing with sweet clover and pazopanib (Votrient): this herb can contain coumarin, and if it spoils or ferments it can form dicoumarol, a blood-thinning compound. Pazopanib itself, while fighting kidney cancer, already carries its own real risk of bleeding (think nosebleeds, bruising, blood in the urine or stool, and in rare cases more serious internal bleeding). Stacking a supplement that may also thin the blood on top of that could add up.

I'll be honest, this concern is theoretical and based on the plant's chemistry, not strong human studies. But because pazopanib's bleeding risk is well known, I'd play it safe. Please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding sweet clover.

About Pazopanib

What Is Pazopanib Used For?

Brand name: Votrient

Pazopanib tablets — sold as the brand Votrient and as generic pazopanib — are used to treat two types of advanced cancer in adults: advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the most common form of kidney cancer, and advanced soft tissue sarcoma (STS) in patients who have already received prior chemotherapy.

Important limitation: Pazopanib has not been shown to work in adipocytic soft tissue sarcoma (a subtype involving fat cells) or in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), so it is not used for those cancers.
