Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: tragacanth swells into a thick, slippery gel in your stomach. When that gel is sitting in your gut at the same time as a swallowed pill like phenoxybenzamine, it could in theory trap some of the drug and change how much of it actually gets absorbed. That might mean a bit less of the medicine reaching your blood (so weaker blood pressure control), or in some cases a bit more.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not something proven in people. Still, since phenoxybenzamine controls the blood pressure spikes and sweating from a pheochromocytoma, you don't want surprises. An easy fix is spacing them out: take your phenoxybenzamine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. Watch for dizziness, a racing heart, or stuffy nose, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Phenoxybenzamine hydrochloride capsules are used to treat pheochromocytoma — a rare tumor of the adrenal gland that releases large bursts of stress hormones, causing dangerous spikes in blood pressure and heavy sweating. The capsules help keep those episodes under control.

If the heart rate becomes too fast during treatment, a doctor may also prescribe a beta-blocker alongside phenoxybenzamine.
