Tree Of Heaven and Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen

Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Tree Of Heaven interacts with.

Theoretically, tree of heaven extract might reduce platelet aggregation and increase the risk of bleeding if used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. In vitro evidence shows that tree of heaven crude extract attenuates epinephrine and adenosine diphosphate-induced platelet aggregation. This interaction has not been seen in humans. Until more is known, use with caution in patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep an eye on with Combogesic (which combines acetaminophen and ibuprofen). The ibuprofen half already has a mild blood-thinning effect of its own, since it slows down how your platelets clump together to form clots. In lab studies, Tree of Heaven extract seemed to do something similar. So in theory, pairing the two could nudge your bleeding risk a little higher.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's based only on test-tube work, not real people, so we don't actually know it happens in the body. Still, watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach upset, since ibuprofen can already irritate the stomach. If you take Combogesic regularly, just run your Tree of Heaven use by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is a fast-growing, invasive tree whose bark has been used in traditional medicine, mostly for digestive complaints and parasites.
