Here's the simple version: chlorpromazine already tends to make people drowsy, slowed down, and a little dizzy or lightheaded, especially when you first start it. Tree turmeric (mostly its berberine) has shown calming, sedative-like effects in animal studies, so the worry is that the two together could pile on and leave you more sleepy or foggy than usual.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical and comes from lab and animal work, not from people. So it's not a reason to panic. Chlorpromazine isn't a prodrug, so berberine isn't blocking or boosting its activation; this is just an additive sedation concern. If you'd like to try tree turmeric, check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and watch for extra drowsiness.

Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can inhibit CYP2D6.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear chlorpromazine (Thorazine). Berberine, the active piece of tree turmeric, appears to slow that enzyme down. When the enzyme works slower, chlorpromazine can build up and hang around longer, which may mean stronger effects than you bargained for.

With chlorpromazine specifically, that could look like extra drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness when you stand up, a dry mouth, or more pronounced muscle stiffness or restlessness. The good news is this is mostly theoretical, based on lab work and some early human data, so it isn't a sure thing. Still, before you pair them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how you're feeling.

What Is Chlorpromazine Used For?

Brand names: Thorazine, Thorazine Spansules

Chlorpromazine is used to manage psychotic disorders and treat schizophrenia. It also controls nausea and vomiting, relieves restlessness and apprehension before surgery, and controls the manic phase of manic-depressive illness. Other uses include relief of intractable hiccups, treatment of acute intermittent porphyria, and use as an adjunct in tetanus treatment.

In children ages 1 to 12, it is used for severe behavioral problems marked by explosive or combative behavior, and for short-term treatment of hyperactive children with conduct disorders. The oral forms are also approved for the management of manifestations of psychotic disorders broadly, in addition to the uses shared with the injection form.
