Citalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs that are substrates of CYP3A4.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.

Here's the gist: the berberine in tree turmeric can gently slow down an enzyme in your liver called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear citalopram. When that pathway is partly blocked, citalopram can hang around a bit longer and build up, which may nudge its effects (and side effects) upward.

For citalopram specifically, that could mean more drowsiness, nausea, or jitteriness. The bigger concern is that higher citalopram levels can stretch out the heart's QT interval, so the dose really matters here. The interaction is mostly theoretical and the effect appears moderate, so don't panic, but please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing concentrated berberine supplements with your citalopram.

What Is Citalopram Used For?

Brand name: Celexa

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
