Deflazacort falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs that are substrates of CYP3A4.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.

Here's the thing to know about pairing tree turmeric with deflazacort. Deflazacort needs your body to switch it on, and once active it gets cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The berberine in tree turmeric can mildly slow that enzyme down. So in theory, the active form of your steroid could hang around longer and build up a bit, meaning a stronger overall effect.

What might that look like in real life? More of the usual steroid side effects, like fluid retention and puffiness, raised blood sugar, mood or sleep changes, or stomach upset. This is more of a concern with concentrated berberine supplements than with small culinary amounts. Since this is still mostly theoretical, please don't stop or change anything. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
