Tree Turmeric has a moderate interaction with Ethotoin. Theoretically, use of tree turmeric along with CNS depressants might increase the risk of additive therapeutic and adverse effects.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Ethotoin
Ethotoin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can have sedative effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Ethotoin (Paganone) is an older seizure medicine in the same family as phenytoin, and one of its common effects is making people feel drowsy or a bit foggy. Berberine, the active compound in tree turmeric, has shown mild sedative or calming effects in animal studies. So in theory, taking the two together could add up and leave you feeling sleepier, dizzier, or less alert than usual.
I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's based on lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it's more a caution than a proven problem. There's no evidence that tree turmeric changes ethotoin levels in your blood. Still, since ethotoin already affects alertness, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a berberine supplement.

Tree turmeric (Berberis aristata) is a shrub used in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine, valued mainly for its berberine content. Natural Medicines records Ethotoin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Tree Turmeric — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
