Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs that are substrates of CYP3A4.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.

Here's the thing to know if you're on imatinib (Gleevec) and thinking about tree turmeric. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break imatinib down at a steady pace. The berberine in tree turmeric can partly block that enzyme, which means imatinib may clear more slowly and build up in your blood. Imatinib is an active drug already (not a prodrug), so higher levels would mean a stronger effect and likely more side effects, things like nausea, fluid retention and swelling, muscle cramps, fatigue, or low blood counts.

Most of this comes from lab work and early human data, so it's more of a caution than a certainty. Please don't change anything on your own. Just check with your oncologist or pharmacist first.

What Is Imatinib Used For?

Brand name: Gleevec

Imatinib treats a range of blood cancers and solid tumors. It is used for Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) in adults and children — whether newly diagnosed or in more advanced phases — and for Philadelphia chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL) in both adults and pediatric patients.

It is also used for Kit-positive gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), including after surgical removal, and for several rarer conditions: myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative diseases (MDS/MPD) linked to specific gene changes, aggressive systemic mastocytosis (ASM), hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) and/or chronic eosinophilic leukemia (CEL), and unresectable, recurrent, or metastatic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP).
