Mexiletine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can inhibit CYP2D6.

Here's the simple version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break down and clear mexiletine. The berberine in tree turmeric can slow that enzyme down. When the cleanup crew works slower, mexiletine can build up a bit higher than usual in your blood.

Since mexiletine is a heart rhythm drug with a fairly narrow safety window, even modest changes are worth watching. Higher levels could mean more side effects like nausea, dizziness, tremor, blurred vision, or in rarer cases new rhythm problems. This is mostly theoretical and based on lab and early human data, so don't panic. Just talk with your pharmacist or doctor before adding tree turmeric, and don't change your mexiletine on your own.

About Mexiletine

What Is Mexiletine Used For?

Brand name: Mexitil

Mexiletine Hydrochloride capsules are indicated for the treatment of documented, life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias — for example, sustained ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm originating in the lower chambers). Because mexiletine itself can trigger arrhythmias, it is not recommended for minor or symptom-free irregular heartbeats.

Treatment is started in a hospital setting so heart rhythm can be monitored closely. Antiarrhythmic drugs, including mexiletine, have not been shown to improve overall survival in patients with ventricular arrhythmias.
