Simeprevir Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs that are substrates of CYP3A4.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.

Here's the gist for Olysio (simeprevir): your liver relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medicine from your body. Berberine, the active compound in tree turmeric, can moderately slow that enzyme down. When CYP3A4 is blocked, simeprevir isn't broken down as quickly, so its levels can creep up and its effects (and side effects) may be stronger than expected.

For simeprevir that could mean more nausea, itching, rash, or sensitivity to sunlight. The effect is mostly theoretical and based on lab and early human data, so it isn't a sure thing, but it's worth taking seriously. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing tree turmeric with your hepatitis C treatment.

About Simeprevir

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
