Tree Turmeric + Valbenazine Tosylate
Valbenazine Tosylate brand name: Ingrezza.
Valbenazine Tosylate falls into 3 drug categories that Tree Turmeric can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, use of tree turmeric along with CNS depressants might increase the risk of additive therapeutic and adverse effects.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Tree Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Valbenazine Tosylate falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Tree Turmeric in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 3Why this applies to Valbenazine Tosylate
Valbenazine Tosylate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can have sedative effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Ingrezza (valbenazine) and tree turmeric. Valbenazine can already make some people feel drowsy or tired. The concern on file is that berberine, the active compound in tree turmeric, showed sedative effects in animal studies. So in theory, taking the two together could add up and leave you feeling sleepier, foggier, or more wiped out than usual.
I want to be honest that this is a fairly soft, theoretical concern. It comes from lab and animal work, not from studies in people, so we don't really know how much it matters in real life. Still, if you're considering tree turmeric, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you already notice daytime drowsiness on Ingrezza. Don't change anything on your own.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Valbenazine Tosylate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can inhibit CYP2D6.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear valbenazine (Ingrezza). The berberine in tree turmeric can slow that enzyme down a bit. When that happens, valbenazine can hang around longer and build up, which may make its effects (and side effects) a little stronger than expected.
With valbenazine, that could mean more drowsiness or sleepiness, and there's a chance of effects on heart rhythm (QT prolongation) at higher levels. To be fair, this is mostly theoretical, based on lab work and limited human data, so it may not cause trouble for everyone. Still, since this is a brain medicine where blood levels matter, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before adding a concentrated berberine supplement rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Valbenazine Tosylate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, moderately inhibits CYP3A4.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist for your Ingrezza (valbenazine): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break this medicine down. Berberine, the main active part of tree turmeric, can slow that enzyme down a bit. When clearance slows, more valbenazine can hang around in your system, which may nudge up its effects and side effects.
For valbenazine, that could mean more drowsiness, balance trouble, or in some cases changes to your heart's rhythm (QT prolongation). The supplement piece is mostly theoretical, but the CYP3A4 link itself is well documented, so I'd be cautious. Please don't start or stop anything on your own. Just loop in your pharmacist or prescriber before adding tree turmeric so they can check whether it's a good fit for you.

- Digestive complaints
- Skin and eye conditions
- Antimicrobial uses
- Liver support
Tree turmeric (Berberis aristata) is a shrub used in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine, valued mainly for its berberine content. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Valbenazine
What Is Valbenazine Used For?
Brand name: Ingrezza
Valbenazine — sold as Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle — is approved for two conditions in adults. The first is tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder that causes uncontrolled, repetitive facial or body movements, often brought on by long-term use of certain psychiatric medications. The second is chorea associated with Huntington's disease, which refers to the involuntary, dance-like jerking movements that are a hallmark of that condition.
Both Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle are approved for both of these uses.
