Here's the honest picture with Wahoo and your doxycycline. Wahoo naturally carries heart-active compounds called cardenolides, which behave a lot like digoxin. The concern on file is that pairing them with a tetracycline like doxycycline could raise the risk of those heart-glycoside compounds building up. Doxycycline can shift the gut bacteria that normally break down some of these substances, so theoretically more stays active in your system, which could mean an irregular or pounding heartbeat, nausea, or feeling faint.

I want to be clear that this is theoretical, based on how these things work rather than strong real-world data. The bigger issue, frankly, is that Wahoo is a poisonous plant with no proven benefit. I would not use it at all, and please run any supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Doxycycline Used For?

Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline family of antibiotics. It's prescribed for many types of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tick-borne illnesses like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and eye infections. It's also used to help prevent malaria and, in some cases, as a helper treatment for severe acne.

In situations where penicillin-type antibiotics can't be used — due to allergy, for example — doxycycline can step in as an alternative. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.
