Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS
Why this applies to Chlortetracycline
Chlortetracycline falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Wahoo interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the idea behind this pairing. Wahoo naturally contains heart-active compounds called cardenolides, which act a lot like cardiac glycosides (think digoxin). When you take an antibiotic like chlortetracycline alongside it, the worry is that the antibiotic can shift your gut bacteria and tweak how your body handles those heart-active substances, potentially letting them build up. That could nudge you toward signs of cardiac glycoside toxicity, like nausea, vomiting, an irregular or slow heartbeat, or feeling dizzy.
I'll be honest with you: this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not something proven in real patients. The bigger issue is that Wahoo itself is a poisonous plant with no safe dose, so I wouldn't recommend using it at all. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything here.

About Wahoo
What is Wahoo?
- Constipation (traditional laxative)
- Digestive complaints
- Liver and gallbladder support (folk use)
- Fluid retention (traditional diuretic)
- Skin irritations (folk use)
Wahoo is a North American shrub historically used as a laxative and 'liver tonic,' but it is a poisonous plant with no proven benefit and a real risk of serious harm. Because it contains heart-affecting and other toxic compounds, we do not recommend using it, and there is no established safe dose.
