These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Wahoo interacts with whole categories of medication. Doripenem falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Wahoo in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
MACROLIDE ANTIBIOTICS
1 of 2Why this applies to Doripenem
Doripenem falls under MACROLIDE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Wahoo interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Let me be upfront here: Wahoo is a poisonous plant we do not recommend at all. The worry on file is that Wahoo contains heart-active compounds (cardiac glycosides), and combining them with certain medicines could add up to heart toxicity, things like an irregular or slow heartbeat, nausea, or feeling faint.
The thing is, this concern was written for macrolide antibiotics. Doripenem (Doribax) is actually a carbapenem, a different family, and it is not known to meaningfully affect how the body handles cardiac glycosides. So the real risk here comes from the Wahoo itself, not from any clear Doripenem interaction. This is a theoretical, lab-based concern, not something proven. Please skip the Wahoo and talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything with your antibiotic.

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS
2 of 2Doripenem also falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Let me be upfront here: the bigger concern with Wahoo isn't really your doripenem at all. Wahoo is a poisonous plant that contains heart-active compounds (cardiac glycosides), and it has no proven benefit. The interaction on file is only theoretical, based on how these compounds look on paper, and it really applies more to the tetracycline drugs. Doripenem is a carbapenem antibiotic given by IV in the hospital, and it isn't a prodrug, so there's no good evidence it changes how Wahoo behaves.
The honest takeaway: Wahoo itself can cause dangerous heart rhythm problems and gut irritation on its own, so it's the plant I'd steer you away from. If you're fighting a serious infection, please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before taking any herbal product.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Doripenem page
“Two entries here matter more than all the others, and I would read them first. Doripenem (Doribax) is an intravenous antibiotic reserved for serious bacterial infections, which means anything that weakens treatment or piles on risk deserves genuine caution.”

About Wahoo
What is Wahoo?
- Constipation (traditional laxative)
- Digestive complaints
- Liver and gallbladder support (folk use)
- Fluid retention (traditional diuretic)
- Skin irritations (folk use)
Wahoo is a North American shrub historically used as a laxative and 'liver tonic,' but it is a poisonous plant with no proven benefit and a real risk of serious harm. Because it contains heart-affecting and other toxic compounds, we do not recommend using it, and there is no established safe dose.
About Doripenem Injection
What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?
Brand name: Doribax
-
Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.
-
Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
