Wahoo and Rivaroxaban

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Rivaroxaban and Wahoo in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Rivaroxaban

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Rivaroxaban is filed under 5 classifications — including anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs, p-glycoprotein substrates, cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates. Wahoo has documented interactions with 6 drug classes — the most serious being digoxin (lanoxin) (major), diuretic drugs (moderate) and macrolide antibiotics (moderate) — and none of Rivaroxaban’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

What Wahoo Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Rivaroxaban. It is the side-effect record for Wahoo on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Wahoo, this list is the first place to look. One entry is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Shortness of breath Worth acting on Additional detail

“Wahoo is considered poisonous (17). Several hours after ingesting wahoo seeds, people experience severe upset stomach, sometimes with bloody diarrhea, fever, shortness of breath, circulatory problems, signs of collapse, stupor increasing to unconsciousness, alternating with motor restlessness, severe tonic-clonic spasms with locked jaw muscles and coma.”

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Wahoo — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Rivaroxaban’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Rivaroxaban column appears here.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Rivaroxaban

This page covers Wahoo only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Rivaroxaban page lists 285 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Danshen (major), Grapefruit (major), Piracetam (major) and St. John's Wort (major).

By severity: 5 major · 240 moderate · 40 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rivaroxaban page

“Grapefruit is the interaction I would flag first for anyone taking rivaroxaban (Xarelto). It slows how the body clears this blood thinner, and higher levels mean more bleeding risk.”

About Wahoo

What is Wahoo?

Wahoo
  • Constipation (traditional laxative)
  • Digestive complaints
  • Liver and gallbladder support (folk use)
  • Fluid retention (traditional diuretic)
  • Skin irritations (folk use)

Wahoo is a North American shrub historically used as a laxative and 'liver tonic,' but it is a poisonous plant with no proven benefit and a real risk of serious harm. Because it contains heart-affecting and other toxic compounds, we do not recommend using it, and there is no established safe dose.

Euonymus atropurpureus · Celastraceae · Dried root bark and stem bark (historically) · Historically tinctures, extracts, and powdered bark; rarely available today

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Wahoo is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Wahoo record says about it on its own.

Wahoo: dosing

There is no established safe or effective dose of wahoo, and we do not recommend using it. In most cases the safest choice is to avoid it entirely and use a better-studied, safer option instead.

About Rivaroxaban

What Is Rivaroxaban Used For?

Brand name: Xarelto

Rivaroxaban helps prevent and treat harmful blood clots. Across products, adults use it to lower stroke risk in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and lower the chance those clots come back.

Rivaroxaban tablets are also used to prevent DVT after hip or knee replacement surgery and to prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in acutely ill medical patients. With aspirin, they reduce major cardiovascular events in coronary artery disease (CAD) and major thrombotic vascular events in peripheral artery disease (PAD). Children use it too: rivaroxaban for oral suspension (and Xarelto and Rivaroxaban tablets) is for VTE treatment and recurrence prevention from birth to under 18 years, and for clot prevention in children 2 and older with congenital heart disease after the Fontan procedure.

Most-Reported Side Effects for Rivaroxaban
