Wahoo and Urea

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Urea

Urea falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Wahoo interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of potassium-depleting diuretics with wahoo can increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion. Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

First things first: I would steer clear of Wahoo altogether. It is a poisonous plant with no proven benefit, and it carries heart-active compounds (cardiac glycosides) that can become dangerous when your body's potassium runs low.

Here is where Urea fits in. Urea (Ureaphil) is an osmotic diuretic, so it pulls extra water out and increases urine output. Like many diuretics, it can drag potassium down along the way. If your potassium drops, the heart-affecting toxins in Wahoo can hit harder, raising the risk of an irregular or unsafe heartbeat. This concern is theoretical, based on how these substances behave rather than on real case reports, but it is not a combination worth testing. Please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using Wahoo with any diuretic.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Urea page

“Urea (Ureaphil) is an osmotic diuretic, a drug that pulls fluid out of the body to relieve pressure inside the skull or the eye. Because it works by shifting fluid and blood pressure, this is a list to read with genuine care.”

About Wahoo

What is Wahoo?

Wahoo
  • Constipation (traditional laxative)
  • Digestive complaints
  • Liver and gallbladder support (folk use)
  • Fluid retention (traditional diuretic)
  • Skin irritations (folk use)

Wahoo is a North American shrub historically used as a laxative and 'liver tonic,' but it is a poisonous plant with no proven benefit and a real risk of serious harm. Because it contains heart-affecting and other toxic compounds, we do not recommend using it, and there is no established safe dose.
