Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
QUININE
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version. Quinine itself can affect your heart's electrical rhythm. Wahoo contains natural heart-active compounds (called cardenolides) that work in the gut and on the heart too. So the worry isn't that one is breaking down the other, it's that putting two heart-stressing substances together could add up and raise the chance of a dangerous rhythm problem.
To be fair, this concern is theoretical, based on what we know about how these substances behave, not on real reported cases. But honestly, Wahoo is a poisonous plant with no proven benefit, so I'd steer clear of it regardless. If you've been taking it or are considering it alongside your quinine, please check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Wahoo
What is Wahoo?
- Constipation (traditional laxative)
- Digestive complaints
- Liver and gallbladder support (folk use)
- Fluid retention (traditional diuretic)
- Skin irritations (folk use)
Wahoo is a North American shrub historically used as a laxative and 'liver tonic,' but it is a poisonous plant with no proven benefit and a real risk of serious harm. Because it contains heart-affecting and other toxic compounds, we do not recommend using it, and there is no established safe dose.
