Wild Lettuce and Chlorprothixene

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Chlorprothixene

Chlorprothixene falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Wild Lettuce interacts with.

Studies report varying evidence on whether or not wild lettuce contains hyoscyamine, an anticholinergic drug. If it does, it appears to be in very low amounts. Nevertheless, there have been case reports of individuals consuming large amounts of wild lettuce experiencing anticholinergic-related side effects, such as constipation, dry mouth, dizziness, and sweating. Therefore, if you are already taking a drug with anticholinergic effects, you should be cautious about combining it with wild lettuce as the risk of side effects may be increased.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Chlorprothixene (Taractan) is an older antipsychotic that already carries its own anticholinergic load, meaning it can leave you with a dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, dizziness, and trouble urinating. Wild lettuce might contain a tiny bit of an anticholinergic compound, and there are scattered reports of people who took large amounts feeling those same dry, foggy, constipated effects.

So the worry is simple addition: stacking wild lettuce on top of your chlorprothixene could nudge those side effects a little harder. The evidence here is weak and the herb's anticholinergic content is low at best, so it's a be cautious, not a panic. Casual or culinary amounts are unlikely to matter, but concentrated supplement doses could. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Chlorprothixene page

“Chlorprothixene (Taractan) is an older antipsychotic that already causes drowsiness, dry mouth, and constipation on its own, and most of the supplements on this page push on those same weaknesses, so this list deserves genuine care. More than half the entries are herbs with atropine-like activity, henbane and scopolia among them, that…”
