Studies report varying evidence on whether or not wild lettuce contains hyoscyamine, an anticholinergic drug. If it does, it appears to be in very low amounts. Nevertheless, there have been case reports of individuals consuming large amounts of wild lettuce experiencing anticholinergic-related side effects, such as constipation, dry mouth, dizziness, and sweating. Therefore, if you are already taking a drug with anticholinergic effects, you should be cautious about combining it with wild lettuce as the risk of side effects may be increased.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing. Fluphenazine already carries its own anticholinergic activity, which is why people taking it sometimes notice dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, dizziness, or trouble urinating. Wild lettuce may add a little of that same drying effect on top, so combining the two could make those nuisance side effects more noticeable.

I'd be honest though, the evidence here is on the weaker side. It's unclear whether wild lettuce even contains meaningful amounts of anticholinergic compounds, and the reports of problems came from people taking large amounts. A casual or occasional dose likely matters less than a concentrated supplement. Still, since fluphenazine is a serious medication, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding wild lettuce.

What Is Fluphenazine Used For?

Brand names: Prolixin, Permitil, Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are indicated for the management of psychotic disorders. Fluphenazine Hydrochloride Injection is also used for psychotic disorders and can bridge patients to oral therapy.

Fluphenazine Decanoate Injection is a long-acting form specifically intended for patients who need extended antipsychotic treatment — for example, those with chronic schizophrenia who benefit from a single injection that can last up to four weeks or longer. It is not approved for behavioral problems related to intellectual disability, and it is not approved for dementia-related psychosis in elderly patients.
