Studies report varying evidence on whether or not wild lettuce contains hyoscyamine, an anticholinergic drug. If it does, it appears to be in very low amounts. Nevertheless, there have been case reports of individuals consuming large amounts of wild lettuce experiencing anticholinergic-related side effects, such as constipation, dry mouth, dizziness, and sweating. Therefore, if you are already taking a drug with anticholinergic effects, you should be cautious about combining it with wild lettuce as the risk of side effects may be increased.

Here's the gist with this pairing. Hyoscyamine itself is already a strong anticholinergic, meaning it dries you out and slows your gut on purpose. Wild lettuce may have mild anticholinergic-type activity of its own, though the evidence here is shaky and mostly comes from case reports in people who took large amounts.

If the two stack up, you could see more of hyoscyamine's usual side effects: dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness, trouble urinating, and feeling overheated since you sweat less. Tiny or occasional amounts of wild lettuce probably won't matter much, but concentrated supplement doses are the concern. Since this is a possible, not proven, interaction, I'd simply loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Hyoscyamine Used For?

Brand names: Levsin, Levsin SL, Levsin Injection

  • Hyoscyamine is used to control symptoms associated with disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It works by decreasing the motion of the stomach and intestines and the secretion of stomach fluids, including acid. Hyoscyamine is also used in the treatment of bladder spasms, peptic ulcer disease, diverticulitis, colic, irritable bowel syndrome, cystitis, and pancreatitis. Hyoscyamine may also be used to treat certain heart conditions, to control the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and rhinitis (runny nose), and to reduce excess saliva production.
