Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing with combining wild lettuce and doxepin: both can make you drowsy. Doxepin already slows down brain activity to help you sleep, and wild lettuce is traditionally used as a mild sedative. Put them together and those calming effects can stack up. You might feel extra groggy, dizzy, or foggy the next morning, and your balance could be off, which raises the risk of a fall.

I want to be upfront that this is a theoretical concern based on how these substances work, not on strong human studies, and wild lettuce's calming effect is generally mild. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before you pair them, especially if you're older or take other sleep aids.

“Doxepin is a sedating tricyclic prescribed for depression, anxiety, and often sleep itself, and the people taking it tend to shop the same shelf where the trouble sits. Of the 186 supplements on file, 78 deepen its drowsiness, with alcohol (beer and wine carry major, well-documented ratings) and kava the clearest examples, and I would…”
